What is Acupuncture?

Developed by the ancient Chinese, acupuncture is a therapy that consists of stimulating designated points on the skin by the insertion of needles. Acupuncture is part of Chinese medicine which includes herbal medicine, Tai Ji, Qi Gong among others.

The Chinese found that certain locations on the surface of the body are related to internal body functions. In Chinese medicine it is believed that there is a network of energy that flows through the body and connects these locations/points by way of channels called “meridians.” The meridians are related to specific organs and functions and form a network which has circulating energy called “Qi” or “Chi” that moves like an electric current. As long as the energy flow is not blocked and has the appropriate strength and balance the body functions healthfully. Disease creates an imbalance in this system so that the signals/energy is weak, too strong, blocked, crossed, or not moving in the proper pathway.

Simply stated, acupuncture is a way of making balancing adjustments to the body’s “Chi” which promotes proper functioning of the physical body.

Acupuncture is done using extremely thin flexible needles made of stainless steel and silver alloy. There is often brief discomfort when the needle passes through the skin. The needles contain no medication – they are simply a tool to help balance the body’s energy.

It has been used for 5,000 years in China and is still a frequent treatment of choice for a quarter of the world’s population.

Most side effects are minor and may include: occasional dizziness – especially during the first treatment, slight bleeding after the needles are removed, infection at the needle site.

Acupuncture is a safe, inexpensive and effective treatment for many chronic disorders and can be used preventatively as well.
