“The Benefits of Reflexology” at Atwater Library during World Reflexology Week

The Benefits of Reflexology
Tuesday, September 24 from 6PM – 7:30PM
at Atwater Library (1720 Foxon Road, North Branford)

In celebration of World Reflexology Week (September 23 – 29), Julie Thackeray of Solutions for Wellness will host a presentation on The Benefits of Reflexology at North Branford’s Atwater Library (1720 Foxon Road) on Tuesday, September 24 from 6PM – 7:30PM. The event is free, but guests are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the North Branford Food Pantry.

While looked upon today as an alternative medicine technique, Reflexology — the stimulation of pressure points located on the feet, hands or ears — is actually an ancient healing modality dating back to as early as Egyptian times. It can be used either as a stand-alone therapy that can assist the body in returning to homeostasis and relieving stress or as an adjunct complimentary therapy to Western medicine. Other benefits include: improved blood flow, reduced anxiety, pain reduction, enhancement of medical care (i.e. diabetes and asthma), complimentary to cancer care, easing PMS and menopausal symptoms, and helpful for foot conditions such as plantar fasciitis. Young and old alike can benefit from the effect that reflexology has on the entire body because it promotes the relaxation response and the release of the beta endorphins to leave you feeling peaceful and relaxed.

Essential Oils, Wellness

Summer Scents Sense

The fragrant scent of an orange as it is being peeled, the tangy tartness of a fresh juicy grapefruit, the bold scent of lime or lemon – these fresh clean vibrant mouth-watering scents remind me of summer. When the sun is shining high and bright up in the sky and the days are long, filled with laughter, friends, and happy times.

Essential oils capture the essence of these fruits and other plants – all you have to do is open the bottle, inhale the pure unadulterated fragrance and experience how they can make you feel! I call the citrus oils especially “sunshine in a bottle.” You can’t help but smile when you inhale their fragrance – so uplifting!

One of the ways I like to use essential oils is to diffuse them into the air with a diffuser. A gray cloudy day? No problem – diffuse orange essential oil mixed with some peppermint essential oil for an uplifting, invigorating scent, sit back and notice the shift in everyone’s mood! Get creative with Lavender and Orange, Lemon or Young Living’s™ blend called “Purification.” So many choices! You are only limited by your imagination!

Another way to use them is to apply them topically. Mix your favorite oils into a carrier oil to create your own personal “perfume” and apply to your wrists or neck. Having peace of mind that your scent doesn’t contain any chemicals! Add oils to your favorite body lotion that you use to moisturize and replenish your skin, add them to your bath salts and soak away the stress and tension of the day.

A caution about topical application of oils – especially citrus oils. When you put them on your skin it is advised that those areas not be exposed to sunlight for 12-48 hours. This is because the oils can cause something called photosensitivity – increasing the likelihood of getting sunburned on the areas they were applied to. If you must apply these oils, put them on areas of skin that will not be exposed to the sun as a way of safeguarding against sunburn.

Break Out The Flip Flops (and Reflexology) – Summer Is Finally Here!

Finally – we’re able to put our boots and winter woolies away (hopefully!) and bring out our sandals and flip flops!

This past weekend, my partner and I took advantage of the warm temperatures and headed to the beach, my all-time favorite place! Exploring the trails at Hammonasset Beach, walking the path along the shore, and finally onto the warm sandy beach to dip our toes in! Heaven on earth!

So what could possibly go wrong? Later that evening, as we continued to relax and reminisce about our perfect day, Jim started to hobble when he walked. After all our walking, he had started experiencing tenderness and muscle spasms in his feet and lower legs – why you might ask? He wore flip flops to do all this walking and now was feeling the painful reminder about the importance of wearing the right footwear for the activity. Who would have “thunk” it!

Flip flops are great for short distances and especially to slip on when walking on the hot sand. Yet for longer walks that are on different surfaces – sand, trails, pavement – flip flops can actually cause strain in the muscles of the foot and lower leg as your foot grips the shoe to keep it on.

A better choice may be a more supportive type of sandal or other type of athletic footwear that supports your foot and doesn’t cause muscle strain.

Yet once the discomfort is there, what can you do?

First, apply gentle reflexology, massage to the area to ease the discomfort.

Put your feet up on the sofa or ottoman and point the toes up toward the ceiling and then gently down toward the floor. This gives the calf and foot muscles a gentle stretch.

While your feet are up, draw large circles clockwise and counterclockwise with your feet.

While sitting, gently roll the bottom of your foot on a tennis, lacrosse or golf ball.

Freeze a tall 8 oz. disposable water bottle, put a sock on (never put ice packs directly onto the skin – it can damage the tissue) and
gently roll your foot on the ice bottle. The cold can help ease the discomfort and “massage” the sore areas.

Soak your feet in an Epsom salt foot bath.

Apply essential oils such as Young Living’s Aroma Siez, Marjoram, Pan Away, Basil, or Oregano. If needed, use a carrier oil and test patch the oil.

Take care of those tootsies! When they feel good – you feel good. After all…everything is interconnected!
