While looked upon today as an alternative medicine technique, Reflexology — the stimulation of pressure points located on the feet, hands or ears — is actually an ancient healing modality dating back to as early as Egyptian times. It can be used either as a stand-alone therapy that can assist the body in returning to homeostasis and relieving stress or as an adjunct complimentary therapy to Western medicine. Other benefits include: improved blood flow, reduced anxiety, pain reduction, enhancement of medical care (i.e. diabetes and asthma), complimentary to cancer care, easing PMS and menopausal symptoms, and helpful for foot conditions such as plantar fasciitis. Young and old alike can benefit from the effect that reflexology has on the entire body because it promotes the relaxation response and the release of the beta endorphins to leave you feeling peaceful and relaxed.

The Chinese found that certain locations on the surface of the body are related to internal body functions. In Chinese medicine it is believed that there is a network of energy that flows through the body and connects these locations/points by way of channels called “meridians.” The meridians are related to specific organs and functions and form a network which has circulating energy called “Qi” or “Chi” that moves like an electric current. As long as the energy flow is not blocked and has the appropriate strength and balance the body functions healthfully. Disease creates an imbalance in this system so that the signals/energy is weak, too strong, blocked, crossed, or not moving in the proper pathway.
